Backpacking packing list

This page forgets your ticks when you close it. QuickPack keeps them, works out how many of each to bring from your dates, and reminds you before you go.

Three things to know before you pack.

  • Pack for a week, however long you go

You will wash clothes on the road. A week of clothes is enough for a month, and for six.

  • Weigh the pack

Aim for one you can carry for an hour without stopping. If it is heavy at home, it is heavier on a hot day abroad.

  • Keep valuables in two places

Some cash and a spare card apart from your wallet, and copies of your passport saved online.

Frequently asked questions

What size backpack do I need?

For most trips, 40 to 50 liters. A pack of about 40 liters usually passes as a cabin bag, and a smaller pack stops you from bringing things you will not use.

How do I do laundry while backpacking?

A sink, a little detergent and a travel clothesline handle most of it, and quick-dry clothes are ready by morning. Hostels and laundromats cover the rest.
