This page forgets your ticks when you close it. QuickPack keeps them, works out how many of each to bring from your dates, and reminds you before you go.
Three things to know before you pack.
-
Break in the boots first
New boots and a long trail make blisters. Wear them on a few walks at home before the trip.
-
No cotton next to the skin
Cotton stays wet and turns cold. Activewear and wool dry fast and keep you warm.
-
Tell someone your route
Leave the name of the trail, and the time you expect to be back, with someone who is not coming.
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I carry on a day hike?
A common rule is about half a liter (17 oz) for each hour of walking, and more in heat or at altitude. On longer routes a filter bottle lets you refill from streams.
What goes in a hiking first aid kit?
Blister plasters, bandages, antiseptic, pain relief, an elastic bandage for a twisted ankle and insect repellent. Add any medicine you take every day.
